What is a Branding Photography Session? 

Branding photography allows small business owners and professionals to cultivate a strong brand image through visuals. While I offer simple headshot photo sessions, branding photography is about so much more than a headshot. You can use brand photos to give off a positive first impression, suggest the story of who you are and build connections with the right people.

What Does a Brand Photographer Do? 

A brand photographer helps you show the world who you are and what you have to offer. As your photographer, I will help you or your business create the best impression with personally crafted images. To capture your brand identity, we’ll use: 

  • Colors: Various colors evoke different feelings — we can use color to convey the right emotion or idea. 
  • Props: Props might include your products and the tools you use to create them.
  • Locations: The backdrop for a photograph helps establish the message you want to communicate.
  • Poses: The way you’re posed can say a lot about your personality and values! 

For instance, if you run a small business selling candles, your brand photographs might feature you creating or lighting your candles. The main goal of the photos will be to showcase both you and your products in a positive light. 

Is Photography Part of Branding?

Photography is a vital part of any branding effort. Potential clients, partners and employers rely on visuals to determine what makes your brand unique. Whether they realize it or not, they gather a first impression while looking at your photographs — and first impressions are powerful. 

In fact, you can formulate a first impression of someone’s face within a tenth of a second. Almost immediately, a viewer decides how trustworthy, competent and likable you are! You can see why putting your best face forward is so important. 

How Do You Use Brand Photography? 

There are several ways you might choose to use your branding photos. Here are some of the things branding photos can help you accomplish: 

  • Elevating your small business: Branding photography is bread and butter for small businesses — professional photos help small business leaders solidify their identity and boost their credibility. In the fast-paced and ever-connected world of social media, good-quality photographs are an absolute must. 
  • Displaying your products: Along the same lines, businesses should use branding photography to show off their products. The right images serve to entice potential customers. You can use branded images to get the word out about what you create and why someone should invest in it. 
  • Putting your face to your name: Branding images, especially headshots, help connect your face to your name. Making yourself more recognizable gives you an edge, helping you stand out among other professionals. For that reason, headshots are an essential addition to any portfolio. 
  • Showing your professionalism: While selfies and casual photos have their place, branding photography supplies you with pictures you can use in professional settings. It allows you to build a stronger image for yourself or your business. 
  • Demonstrating your success: Another use for brand photos is to show off recent success. If you have achieved something notable — won an award, earned a promotion, or something similar — upgraded brand photos can help you get the word out. 

What’s the Difference Between a Headshot and a Branding Session? 

Most branding photography sessions include headshot photos. A headshot is a simple image of your face from about the shoulders up. It shows you making eye contact with the camera and holding a neutral expression or a smile. 

The purpose of a headshot is simple — it clearly shows your face. You can use headshots for your social and networking profiles, email signatures and portfolios. Headshots are just one aspect of a personal branding photography session. You might also need photographs: 

  • Featuring your products. 
  • Including other individuals. 
  • Showing you doing something. 

What Is a Personal Branding Photo Session?

A personal branding photo session is for the person who wants a little more than a new headshot, but doesn’t need the in-depth strategic approach of a Business Branding session. Instead of focusing on head and shoulders, we’ll shoot a variety of crops from headshot to full-length to show you in your best light. Since we have 60 minutes to work, you’ll have time for three to five different outfits.

Brand Photography Examples

Brand photography looks different for everyone. For example,

Tracy and I worked together to showcase the pink cadillac she earned as a Mary Kay Sales Director. Tracy’s personal branding photography gallery includes photos of her posed with her new ride! 

Andrea, on the other hand, is a small business owner who needed photos of herself as well as photos with her products. Andrea’s business branding photography gallery includes photos of her using her products, as well as portraits and headshots. 

Branding Session Types

The length and complexity of your branding session will depend on your goals and priorities. I offer three basic types of branding sessions, including: 

  • A headshot session: Since a headshot session is the least complex, it will involve a simple planning meeting over the phone or via video conference. The photos session will take 30 minutes at a location chosen by me. You’ll receive one digital image file, and you can purchase additional shots as desired. 
  • A personal branding session: The next step up from a simple headshot session is a personal branding session. We’ll spend about an hour taking photos at a location of your choice. You can wear a few different outfits in a variety of poses. 
  • A business branding session: If you’re really serious about elevating your brand, we should talk about a business branding session! These photoshoots are carefully planned to help you achieve your business goals and support your upcoming promotions.
