Lately, I find myself on the lookout for great photo spots everywhere I go. I collect location ideas like some folks collect coins or baseball cards.
When I plan a photo session with a family or high school senior, I need to have lots of ideas in my back pocket to make sure we shoot at a location that really jives with their personality and taste. Everyone loves having options ready to choose from, but if nothing on my list fits, we find a unique spot together.
If you’re looking for a beautiful location for a family photoshoot, let me get you started with some of the most requested local spots. Each one offers a variety of places to photograph within the same overall location so you don’t have to hop in your car and drive to create the combination you’re after.
The Pennsylvania State Capitol, Harrisburg
Our very own State Capitol has fantastic features for your photo occasion – especially if you want to get dressed up. The fountain, columns, granite surfaces, ornate metal-work and curving staircases all lend themselves to fabulous formal photos. Just make sure the legislature isn’t in session as that’s the only time you’re not allowed to take photographs.
As a bonus, State Street and Front Street are nearby, providing even more variety within walking distance of the Capitol itself.
Midtown is packed with all kinds of urban treasures to give your photos that gritty appeal you might be after! You’ll find numerous art murals, graffitied walls, intriguing alleyways & more. Just walking around always gets my creative ideas flowing.
Are you a bookworm? Check out the 6-story Midtown Scholar Book Store, one of America’s largest academic used bookstores.
Built on a bluff overlooking the Susquehanna River, it’s easy to see why this is such a popular spot for all types of photography. You’ll find lovely locations on either side of North Front Street. On the river side lies the mansion with its wide, early 19th-century front porch, brick pathways, and front yard full of trees that shows off some gorgeous foliage in the fall.
On the barn side, you’ll find several matching stone and wood outbuildings, fence-lined paths, a small garden and the imposing Gothic Revival-style Centennial Barn. The covered bridge is also quite the hot-spot for photographers, and you may have to wait your turn to use it.
Lebanon Valley College, Annville
Located in Annville, PA this college campus has a great mix of tree-lined lawns and modern styled buildings that make great backdrops for photos.
My absolute favorite spot is the peace garden. It has the sweetest landscaping with a spring-house, low stone walls, and a wooden bridge over a tiny little creek. It’s nothing short of picturesque.
Founder’s Hall, Hershey
This location is part of The Milton Hershey School Campus and is really beautifully maintained. There are brick walkways, gazebos, vine-covered archways, bridges, flower beds and a pond… Photo spots abound over an extensive area.
Be aware of homecoming and prom dates. You’ll have to fight for a clear spot to take photos during those weekends. Most other days are great!
The above spots are great options for any family or high school senior session, but sometimes my clients want something unique or special. I love working with a family or senior to find the perfect place to achieve the look you’re after or capture your photos in a place that’s meaningful to you. Give me a call or reach out via my contact form so we can talk about your photo session.
